All About Twenty Foot, Forty Foot And Reefer Containers
Exporting and Importing can often be an extremely complicated and mundane process as there are so many rules, regulations as well as countless number of procedures to adhere to. This, many a times, may require to prepare and submit documents for import and export. Usually, freight forwarders would prepare it for us, but it is also good to know for ourselves as to how to complete the relevant documents by understanding what the terms mean.
As such, in our new article series titled “Export Terms”, we would introduce you to all the various terms used in the international trade, be it through air, land or sea freight. We would roll out one related article on a regular basis, which would help you to get a comprehensive understanding as to the document and logistics preparation for the purpose of doing trade internationally
In this article, we would be covering the different types of containers- twenty foot, forty foot as well as reefer containers.
What is a Twenty Foot Container
A twenty foot container is a shipping container that is used for long haul and short haul shipments. Twenty foot containers are popular for shipments and they have a dimension of 20 x 8 x 8 feet.
Containers are used to hold items for shipments to another destination, which could be either domestic or internationally. Twenty foot containers are some times known as their standard reference term, which is the Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). Usually, ports use the term twenty foot equivalent units as a basis for measuring how many containers actually enter and leave their ports. This is because there is more than one type of container for shipments.

What is a Forty Foot Container
A forty foot container is another type of containerized cargo container that is being used for shipments domestically and internationally. As its name suggests, the forty foot container is much larger than the twenty foot equivalent containers. The dimensions are 40 x 8 x 8 feet. Furthermore, just like the Twenty Foot Equivalent Units, there is also a Forty Foot Unit Equivalent, though it is not as popular form of measurement. One Forty Foot Equivalent unit is about 72 cubic meters.
What is a Reefer Container
A reefer container is different from the other forms of container that have been mentioned above, though it does exist in the form of a twenty foot or forty foot container.
The reefer container is a special type of container which has cooling features that could cool the products which are inside it through its self powered cooling system, which is known as the reefer.
