Air, Land and Sea Freight: Which Modes Are Best For Your Shipment

When shipping domestic or international, the option for multiple modes of transport can cause headaches. There can be pro’s and con’s for all three types depending on your type of shipment. Kargo.co.id offer all three types, from the top logistics companies throughout Indonesia.
With over 400 logistics vendors partnered with Kargo, going with a truck over a ship, or a plane over a truck can be very confusing. Below are a few key points of difference between the different transports.

Modes of Transport: Pro’s and Con’s.

Truck Freight

Key Characteristic; Cheapest.

Pro’s Con’s
–      High Availability. Same day delivery at kargo.co.id –      Does not work well for the archipelago country of Indonesia
–      Most Common form of domestic transport. –      Can have a long lead time for long durations
–      All logistics companies will have some form of trucks if customer has any vendor preference. –      Fragile equipment/goods need to be packed extremely well to reduce damage from rough roads
–      Cheapest option for domestic shipments. 30% of back route trucks are empty across Indonesia so large discounts are offered. –      A single truck can only move a certain size goods. Largest offered is a ‘Container Dry/Reefer 40ft’. This carries maximum of 64CBM or 25 tonnes
–      Multiple drop-off points are offered. Kargo.co.id can quote for many places for a truck to deliver too.
–      Will deliver door-to-door service for domestic shipments
–      Has the smallest minimum size for a shipment (20kg)

Sea Freight

Key Characteristic; Biggest.

Pro’s Con’s
–      Large scale shipments are cheapest. –      Have the largest minimal shipment size (100kg).
–      Highly suitable for goods that have long lead times and minimal urgency. –      Delays can be the longest out of any mode as there are many things causing delays (loading/unloading, weather, importing/exporting processes).
–      For the Indonesian archipelago this form of transport can often be the best option as it can cover areas that the others do not. –      Can be difficult to monitor the exact location of your goods (depending on the vendor)
–      Emissions calculator per/kg is best for sea freight in comparison to other modes.
–      For cheap or bulky items, FCL and LTC can be the most effective and price relative.

Air Freight

Key Characteristic; Safest.

Pro’s Con’s
–      Extremely fast for international shipping. –      The most expensive form of transport.
–      One of the safest forms of transport, with minimal lost goods and smoothest for fragile goods –      Will only be from port-to-port. Most logistics vendors will still offer door-to-door service but will need a connecting truck.
–      Fastest growing mode of logistics mode, price is decreasing. –      Large scale shipments may need to be sent in multiple planes.
–      Most reliable mode for delivery times. Majority of the time, air freight will be on time and if delayed, will only be minimal. –      Size of the shipments are limited to particular plane sizes. Oddly shaped or large scale packages can be expensive or impractical.

These are the three key modes of transport that Kargo.co.id specialise in. Amongst the three, different characteristics are evident. Pro’s and con’s can be varied and for particular types of shipments one may be better.

Jump down to kargo.co.id, and see if your shipment will fit in a plane or truck, or maybe it will have to go via ship!

Happy Shipping.
