What is Port to Port and Door to Door Shipping
Exporting and Importing can often be an extremely complicated and mundane process as there are so many rules, regulations as well as countless number of procedures to adhere to. This, many a times, may require to prepare and submit documents for import and export. Usually, freight forwarders would prepare it for us, but it is also good to know for ourselves as to how to complete the relevant documents by understanding what the terms mean.
As such, in our new article series titled “Export Terms”, we would introduce you to all the various terms used in the international trade, be it through air, land or sea freight. We would roll out one related article on a regular basis, which would help you to get a comprehensive understanding as to the document preparation for the purpose of doing trade internationally. In this article, we would be analysing the meaning behind port to port and door to door shipments.
What is Port To Port Shipping
A Port to Port shipping service refers to shipments where the freight forwarding or logistics company is only responsible of taking care of the shipment from the airport or seaport of origin to the airport or seaport of the destination. This means that the freight forwarder or the logistics service provider is not responsible for transporting the goods from the point of origin to the sea port or airport of origin.
Likewise, the firm is also not responsible for the process of transporting the goods from the port of destination to the actual location where the goods should be. The importer and exporter are responsible for the transportation of the goods to and from the ports.
Port to Port shipping is the most affordable shipping service as the importer and exporter only have to pay for the service of shipping the goods between the ports, either by air or sea freight
What is Door To Door Shipping
Door To Door shipping services are different from the Port to Port Shipping services. In fact, this is the most comprehensive type of shipping where the freight forwarder or logistic service provider is responsible for the shipping of goods from the door of the exporter (or seller) to the door of the importer (or buyer). As such, the freight forwarding or logistics company would probably use multi modal type of shipping such as trucks and vessels. Therefore, the overall distance and cost incurred is much higher than that of port to port shipping services, making door to door services the most expensive type of service.
